JOB DESCRIPTION:

Performs general duty law enforcement work to protect life and property in Cleveland County.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Patrols the County in a vehicle, on foot or by other means; serves a variety of civil and criminal papers;

Examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions;

May maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.

Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.

Investigates possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence;

Performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects;

Presents findings in court.

Serves civil and criminal process papers;

Apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to County magistrate and/or County detention facilities;

Operates a two-way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to headquarters;

Maintains vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standard working order;

Transports inmates, mental patients and others to other jurisdictions, medical facilities, and other correctional or related facilities;

Prepares detailed records and reports of activities using prescribed methods;

Assists other law enforcement and emergency agencies in controlling emergency situations;

Advises the public on laws and local ordinances;

Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the department,

Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment.

Skill in the use of firearms, law enforcement equipment, and in the application of self-defense tactics;

Skill in collaborative conflict resolution;

Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations;

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms;

Ability to present effective court testimony;

Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the citizens of Cleveland County;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other public officials.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED equivalence.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and frequent exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (nonweather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have NC Basic Law Enforcement certification prior to assuming duties as a sworn Deputy Sheriff;

Must possess a valid NC Drivers License and clean driving history;

Must be able to pass a drug screening, complete a medical examination by a licensed physician, including psychological testing and evaluation;

Must be 20 years of age prior to hire date;

Must be a US Citizen or possess Naturalization Certification, if applicable;

Must be able to pass our agency physical fitness test;

Must have a clean criminal record to include NO felony convictions;

Must not have had a DWI conviction within the past five years and no more than two in a lifetime;

Must have an Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable;

Must pass the firearm qualification with a score of 75 or better;

Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays.
